Solgaleo Sprites by Xous54 Solgaleo Sprites by Xous54
Since I'm thinking of working on Pokémon Sun/Moon art I started drawing Solgaleo to get used to its design and decided to make a sprite for it. The left sprite is Generation 4/5 size, the right sprite is a slightly bigger version.

I'll probably end up making one for Lunala as well, and I may animate them BW-style if I have enough time.

Feel free to use this for whatever you want, no permission necessary. Credit is appreciated.

The absence of Sugimori in this new generation is so noticeable.  All new Pokémon and new forms of previous Pokémon are either a combination of circles and ovals or sharp, pointed angles.  The detail and variety of Sugimori's designs are sorely missed.  Personally, I will be giving Sun and Moon a pass.  With my little rant concluded, let me say that your pixel work here is excellent.  I look forward to seeing what else you have in store.  :D

Just because artist of the official art is different, doesn't mean that Sugimori is absent. It's not like he designed all Pokemon prior to Sun/Moon.

Though, I'm also not exactly too big on the new official art-style. There's a reason why this is the "WOW! It's model looks WAY better" gen. Though they did state in an interview that they're focusing more on the capabilities, lore, and movements of Pokemon to fit with the "life" theme rather than the design.

While Sugimori may not have single-handedly designed every previous Pokèmon, he was the one to draw the official artwork for every single Pokèmon before now.
This means he at least had final say on how each Pokèmon should look.  It is clear that this is not the case anymore.

As for the Sun and Moon games themselves, I have yet to utter the phrase, "WOW! Its model looks WAY better!"
The only phrase that seems to continue to escape my lips when seeing footage of these games is, "Ugh."

What are you talking about? It's still Sugimori as it's always been.

As of Sun/Moon Sugimori isn't doing the official art for new Pokémon any more, excluding the art for Alolan forms of Kanto Pokémon and a few others like Magearna, Zygarde Cell/Core, and Zygarde 10%. (He still does some of the human character art as well.)

Whether this is a temporary thing or permanent, and how much input Sugimori still has in the process, is unclear, but so far all of the final, official art for the new Alola Pokémon has been done by a different artist.

Where did you get that info? From what I've seen, the art still seems like it was made by him and still will be like this  bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wik…

It may look like his work, but it's easy to tell by things like the linework and shading/highlights that it's a different artist.

For example, compare Chespin and Rowlet:

www.pidgi.net/wiki/images/a/a7…

Sugimori's linework is slightly rough, it's done by hand so there are variations to things like the width and consistency. One of the key features is how wobbly or bumpy it looks in certain places. It's noticeable even in more recent art like Magearna and Alolan Raticate:
www.pidgi.net/wiki/images/4/44…
www.pidgi.net/wiki/images/2/25…

Rowlet's outline, and the outlines of all other Alola Pokémon art excluding the ones I mentioned before, is noticeably more smooth and consistent. Even the brush or tool used to make it looks different, it's more chalk- or crayon-like around the edges.

The shading/highlight differences are another major giveaway, but that's harder to explain in few words. There are key differences that are close to how Sugimori does it but not 100%.

The quickest way to see the difference is to look at the edges of the shaded areas. The new Alola art is much more smooth/blended at the shadows' edges, noticeable if you compare the edge of the shadow at the bottom of Chespin's head to the shadow edge on Rowlet's wings. Texture-wise the new art is different from Sugimori's art as well. The spots texture you see on Magearna's art has been used on many things in the past like Mega Venusaur and the Roggenrola line's art, for example.

I'm not sure if Sugimori or anyone else has officially commented on it yet, but we'll know for sure who the artist is once the TCG makes a card using one of the new Pokémon and the artist name appears in the Illus. box.

He might have did those arts first before adopting a new style. But who knows?

But I agree, we should wait for any sort of official conformation.

Thanks for the assist, Xous54!  :D

Your explanation is 100x better than what I could have shared.  I don't know why The Pokémon Company is keeping this so secret.  Regardless, the absence of Sugimori has taken all the sparkle out of these new games for me.
I'd say they feel like a fan game, but I think that would be unfair to the excellent quality of most Pokémon fan games.

This is gorgeous! I shared it with the Project Azurite group, and they say there's a possibility it'll be used in the game. Thank you for sharing with us, it looks amazing!
